KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER JORGE VELASQUEZ

It was on the 28th of December, 1946 that Jorge Velasquez was born. He is a well known American thoroughbred horse racer. He had his birth in the town of Chepo in the Central American nation of Panama. He is a horse jockey, which is included in the Hall of fame in the American thoroughbred horse racing.

The racing career of Jorge Velasquez began from his birthplace which is Panama. As a teenager, Jorge shifted to the United States. Jorge won the maximum number of races in the United States as compared to any jockey from the US. Not only this, Jorge also topped when it came to money amassing. The year 1978, witnessed an intense rivalry in the field of horse racing. Jorge Velasquez finished in the second place behind “Affirmed”
in three American Triple Crown races in the year 1978. The total length by which he lost those races was below two lengths. Although, some consolation was achieved by both Alydar and Velasquez, it was done only in the Travers Stakes in that same year. The year 1981, witnessed a win for Jorge Velasquez in both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby. However, Jorge failed to win the Triple Crown after going down in the third position in the Summing in Belmont Stakes. In addition, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies were also won by Velasquez, in the year 1985. Apart from that, Jorge Velasquez also managed to win the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. |
